What are dental implants?

Dental implant surgery is the gold standard treatment for replacing missing teeth. A metal implant bonds with the jawbone to create a strong and lasting base for a new tooth. This acts like the root of the original tooth.

Dental implants can replace one tooth or multiple teeth. Once the implant has fused to the bone we can construct a completely bespoke crown the looks and feels like your original tooth.

How is an implant placed?

Following an initial consultation and assessment an implant is placed into the jaw and the gum is then sealed over. Although a local anaesthetic is used to avoid you feeling any pain, the process can also be completed with sedation for nervous patients who may be worried about the procedure.

How long does the implant process take?

The placing of the implant usually takes about an hour. It then takes three months for the implant to bond with the surrounding bone before the new tooth is added. During the wait a temporary tooth can be worn to prevent you walking around with a gap.

What are the benefits of implants?

Dental implants will look and feel like your original tooth. They help to restore your smile and will provide total confidence when eating, talking and smiling. Where a bridge will use a neighbouring tooth for support, an implant is not connected to any other tooth.

What are implant retained dentures?

If you struggle to get along with traditional dentures that are loose and uncomfortable, then an implant retained denture is a simple, cost effective and predictable solution. In many instances, a full set of teeth can be attached to as few as two implants.

What are the benefits?

  • They do not move when talking or eating like traditional dentures.
  • They avoid food being trapped underneath.
  • They can offer a more comfortable solution to missing teeth.
  • They prevent further bone loss and preserve your facial structure.
  • They provide a cost effective solution to replace many teeth compared to multiple implants.
